Se dice que tanto el cuento como la película son una alegoría de la lucha política y económica entre los partidarios del patrón oro y los del bimetalismo (sistema monetario que admite como patrones el oro y la plata, conforme a la relación que la ley establece entre ellos) en Estados Unidos a finales del siglo XIX. El camino de baldosas amarillas representa la falsa promesa del oro; Kansas, el estado agrícola endeudado; los chapines de rubíes de Dorothy, el camino de vuelta a casa y OZ el patrón de medida de oro (oz= onza).

La película, producida en 1939 y dirigida por Victor Fleming, lanzó a Judy Garland al estrellato, en una interpretación que, en un principio, iba destinada a Shirley Temple.
Como ejercicio práctico y divertido, podéis aprender la canción del video. Vocalizad muy bien y repetidla varias veces. El vocabulario más importante de la canción es:
- to be off: ir fuera, lejos.
- wiz: abreviatura de"wizard" (mago)
- whiz: portento, persona que destaca mucho en algo, genio
- A wiz of a whiz es un juego de palabras semántico y del sonido /z/: algo así como "el Rey de reyes", un mago genial.

The celebration in Munchkin Land, the flying monkeys, the rescue of Dorothy, the castle of the witch, the palace of Oz and Dorothy´s strange journey to the end of the city to find the wonderful Wizard of Oz himself:
